Secrets of the Bunny Hutch

Its walls are the colour of a strawberry cream daiquiri, and silver crushed-velvet seats shimmer under the bright lights of Hollywood-style vanity mirrors. This is where purple-haired seamstress extraordinaire Feyi Scott-Oviosa weaves the magic that helps transform our gorgeous girls into corset-clad glamazons.

But when the heat is on before a big event and the Hutch becomes a frenzy of activity, it’s as much Feyi’s charismatic personality as her eight years’ experience of primping and preening to achieve Playboy perfection that works to solve problems and calm nerves.

It’s my job to keep all the girls looking FABULOUS – capitals intended! laughs Feyi, whose flamboyant looks, huge smile and infectious spirit make you wonder whether she should be front of house rather than behind the scenes at Old Park Lane.

“The female body is amazing and corsets make women look and feel so sexy. It’s a real ‘wow’ moment when a new Bunny earns her ears and I put her into costume for the first time. Everyone in the Hutch is excited to see it and you watch her confidence go through the roof!

“All the costumes are individually fitted, not based on conventional sizes at all, so each one works perfectly for the Bunny it’s made for. Every girl’s beauty is individual too, and I know exactly how to enhance it and make her look fantastic. The girls trust me. They know I’ve got them!”

Making dreams come true

Two years ago, when Feyi was charged with making a size 18 Cosmopolitan journalist feel beautiful in a Playboy Bunny costume, her sorceress status was confirmed. The magazine writer adored the transformation, describing Feyi as a magician who gave her a nipped in waist, flat tummy, perky bottom, and long legs. “I look in the mirror and feel the same way I do when I pop on a particularly flattering Snapchat filter,” she said.

Feyi learnt to sew as a child, her little hands perfect for threading needles for her grandmother. She went on to study fashion at Lewisham where her final show – based on boned corsets, naturally – caught the eye of a teacher, who also made event costumes for Playboy and thought Feyi would be an excellent seamstress for the Club.

“There are nine bones in each costume to really cinch the waist and create that hourglass figure,” explains Feyi. “The materials we use here are extra strong but there are always repairs to be done. Boning pops out, zips go, seams split. One night a Bunny Valet sneezed and her costume just went pop, pop, pop front and back!”

Playboy Magazine’s 60th anniversary party, hosted at the Club by Marc Jacobs and Kate Moss, stands out as a particularly high-octane event for Feyi. “I had to make ten black costumes in just two weeks and everything had to be impeccable for guests, who included Tom Jones, Rita Ora and Donatella Versace.”

The Bunny sisterhood

Feyi cares for the costumes of more than 70 Bunny Dealers, Valets and Hosts who work as a tight-knit team to deliver the extraordinary service for which Playboy is world famous. She is also a great listener and disarmingly funny, which helps people feel good no matter what is going on in their personal lives

“Everything about a Bunny has to be on point – tails, ears, cuffs, nails, hair, make-up,” she says. “It can be daunting if someone is having a bad day, but getting them to talk about what’s wrong and telling silly jokes seems to help. I think I’ve learnt how to be a human fire extinguisher down here.

“I grew up without siblings so these girls are my sisters – actually I joke that they are the sisters I didn’t really want, which of course couldn’t be further from the truth. If you think about it, fitting naked girls for skin-tight costumes makes for quite an intimate relationship.

“I love being around people and feeding off their energy so I think it’s natural to want to help someone who is feeling down. It’s great that people seem to see me as this ray of sunshine. It must be the hair!”

In fact, pretty much everything about Feyi makes you smile, from those fabulously vibrant curls to the daring, perfectly-applied makeup and with spectacular RuPaul-style lashes.

Bake Off talent to boot

But it’s not just Feyi herself who’s the showstopper. The gorgeous cakes she makes in her spare time would give any Great British Bake Off contestant a run for their money.

Feyi taught herself to bake with the help of YouTube videos and finds lots of inspiration on Instagram, where she also posts pictures of her own spectacular celebration cakes – check out @teatimewithfeylicia.

“When you have a creative job I think you have to find something creative to do away from work too,” she says. “I’m a big fan of making it up as I go along.”

Among Feyi’s favourite creations are the birthday cake she made for Bunny Zhané in the colours of the Grenada flag, and the ice cream-themed cake complete with chocolate-dipped cakesicles.

“Cakesicles are the best!” she says. “Just mush up some cake with butter cream, put into a lolly mould or shape with your hands, poke in a stick and freeze. When it’s solid, dip into melted chocolate and add sprinkles. Yum!”

From the official Bunny Manual...

The Playboy Bunny and her distinctive costume represent one of the world’s most iconic and recognisable symbols. It is an image that speaks of the good life, fun, excitement, sophistication and charm.

Achieving Playboy Bunny status is highly coveted, so it is important our standards remain high across the globe. Here at Playboy Club London, we offer one of the most sophisticated environments in the world in which to experience the brand.

This guide to being the perfect Bunny walks you through the values and behaviours that have made the Playboy Bunny an international symbol of world-class service and sophisticated fun.

How it all began

The Bunnies are the creation of Hugh M. Hefner, Playboy Magazine’s founder and editor-in-in-chief. They and their costumes were born in the service of Chicago’s immensely popular Playboy Club in 1960, where the satin outfits were worn by the women who served food and drink. As Playboy Clubs grew in number, so did the Bunnies and support staff who worked with them.

Over the years, more than 25,000 Bunnies were employed in the clubs worldwide. Many went on to successful careers in entertainment, business, science, law and the arts. Bunnies took a six-week training course and were held to precise standards of dress, grooming and service. They had to pass inspection before starting their shifts each day to ensure their dress and make-up were in perfect order.

During their most popular years, the costumes were worn by women like Debbie Harry, who became an international rock star, and Susan Sullivan, who launched an acting career. Bunnies were proud of their roles because of the demanding nature of their work and the accomplished company of fellow Bunnies the role came to signify.

Some important facts

  • Each costume is custom-fitted to the individual Bunny.

  • Each club has a seamstress on call to make sure the uniforms are clean and in good repair for each work shift.
  • Each Bunny is supplied with a costume: a body suit, matching ears, collar and cuffs, bow tie, cufflinks, Bunny tail, name badge (rosette), stockings and shoes.
  • Over the years, many have interviewed for the job, but few are selected. Fewer than eight per cent of applicants are hired.
  • During the 1970s, the club division picked a ‘Bunny of the Year’. This pageant was very popular and was televised nationwide on several occasions.
  • Bunny job performance is rated for attitude and cooperation, attendance and punctuality, service, grooming and appearance.

Bunny image

Bunnies are responsible for being perfectly costumed and groomed when on duty. Anything less than a clean, well-fitting costume, matching ears and shoes, clean and fluffy tail, immaculate cuffs and collar and flawless tights is unacceptable.

Playboy Bunny costumes have always been highly visible and will therefore always be subject to public scrutiny. It is essential that the Bunny look her best while on promotion.

Playboy Club London will provide each Bunny with the following required costume items:

  • Costume shell
  • Matching Bunny ears
  • White Bunny tail
  • White collar and cuffs
  • Black bow tie
  • Playboy Bunny cufflinks
  • Name badge
  • Approved shoes are available to purchase
  • Pre-approved regular tights or tights purchased from the seamstress

One or two extra pairs of tights are always worn; the first is a pair of nude, seamless, support tights; the second is a pair of black seamless, regular tights worn over the support. This ensures a smooth, firm look. A Bunny should equip herself with one or two extra pairs of tights in case she snags or runs the pair she is wearing.

All Bunny costumes must be fitted by the club seamstress to the exact measurements of the Bunny. The costumes must not be altered in any way. No additional items or memorabilia are to be worn or affixed to the costume.

Costumes are not to be taken off the premises at any time.
